High:

Really captures the feeling of playing as your favorite Transformer Character, graphics are really nice. The online mode is fun for a weekend.

Low:

The controls are a bit confusing at times, the story is lack-luster (much like the movie), often times I found myself pretty bored with the single player mode.

Ok, let’s be honest here, not many video games that are created from movies end up being very good. However, the video game edition of Transformers 2 should be better than the movie, since the movie left me very disappointed. How awesome is it to play as one of your favorite Transformers and either save the world or destroy it? Growing up Transformers were some of my favorite toys, and now I get to actually control them in virtual death matches against other Transformers?! Totally awesome.

Well, it would be totally awesome if it was done a little better. Let’s start out with the single player campaign, which I found myself yawning through the battles and getting a little frustrated with the AI of the bots I was trying to destroy. It roughly follows the story of the movie, which probably wasn’t a great idea, but it drags on the “boss” fights in each level to where I didn’t even care if I played through this campaign. However, I knew I had to continue to give this game a fair chance. Fair chance I gave this game, and I must say that I just didn’t feel the story mode in this game, it just really kept me uninterested and not caring about the bots I was playing as. Though, I will say that it was cool that each bot really felt unique when you play as them. Bumblebee plays as though you think he should be played, and Ratchet plays as though you would think he would be portrayed. However, it wasn’t enough with the repetitious action and fights.

Now, where the game really shines its glossy robot fighting power is the online co-op modes that is offered. There are five of them, Death match, Team Death Match, One Shall Fall, Control Points and Capture the Flag type game where you must capture the pieces of the Allspark shards from the other team. The One Shall Fall mode is pretty unique having one person playing Megatron and one person playing Optimus Prime on their respective factions and the teams try to kill the leader of their opposing team. Death Match is just everyone for themselves and Team Death Match is just straight up Decepticons versus Autobots, both modes are fairly fun for the first couple hours that you play the game. Then, like the single player mode it gets a little repetitive as I kept playing it.

The graphics in the game were highly detailed, making each Transformer just as they looked in the Bay movies, even in the online mode they have unlocks for G1 fans to change the way each character looks. The sound was a little lacking however, when I played as Starscream I didn’t feel as though the Jet sounds like a Go-kart from Mario Kart, but it didn’t take too much from flying around and owning people as the coolest character in the series. The controls are a little difficult to understand when you first jump in, but I feel they are an improvement from the first game. I found myself accidently transforming in the middle of a gun fight when I didn’t intend to do so.

All in all I was disappointed with this game, the online mode was the only thing that kept me going. Also the fact that if you can put up with the horrible single player mode you unlock tons of G1 content, even actual episodes that you can watch if you do certain things in game. The controls were rusty, the story was bland, the gameplay together just seemed to be lacking but it does capture a nice feel of each Transformer. The online mode will keep you entertained enough for a nice rental, but I would definitely advise against buying this game, also advise against not buying the DVD for the movie when it comes out, afraid that I might see more of John Turturo than I want to see.
